Sure its the starter? Now the weather is getting colder your battery might be struggling, certainly noticed this on my VR on a cold morning after not been driven in a few days

guys i found this post on vortex...apparently the starters for automatics and manuals are the same??

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2359900-DIY-Starter-Upgrade-Repair-troubleshooting-Replacement-%28manual-tranny%29/page2

It states that the best starters are to get an old diesel starter and stick it on a petrol engine...

Again can anyone confirm that they are the same???(auto vs manual starter)  and about the solenoids...it is stated that they are different...but are they interchangeable from manual starter on a automatic..

this would make my part hunting so much easier as i could just pull a starter of any mk3 golf...:)

Have you looked on vagcat.com and cross referenced the part numbers?

i have looked on vagcat.com but there are only two different kinds of starters...and they seem to be related more to power than anything else....(diesel vs petrol maybe?)

but that doesn't mean i've go it right...

If you can hear it spin it might just be solenoid, which can be renewed separately (like surprisingly many things on it).

You can read the part number of your starter from the label. With that should be easy to find correct replacement.

ok i took a look on the starter the number is:

2 339 303 222 722 (can't make out the last number either 2 or 3)

Vagcat.com  has different part numbers so I am stuck...:(

Any help guys???maybe someone has a1.8 and can take a look at the number on their starter?:>>

my mistake as this is on the solenoid only...

the starter is 020911023M.

I don't know if other starters will fit..so any help in that sense would be appreciated.
