Heater Control Cables
« on: 25 November 2013, 11:28 »
I have been looking through the search function and can't quite find what I am looking for. My blowers would only blow to face and not feet or screen. My heater direction control seemed really firm, after taking this apart I noticed the black cable was kinking so wasnt changing direction. I tried to straighten etc but just keeps kinking so will need a new one. I have managed to close the flaps so it just goes to screen for the time being.

My questions are:

where can I get a new cable from?

and secondly it looks as though there should be a 3rd cable, I have a black one and a blue one but looks as if another one should be there, am I right in thinking that?

Thanks in advance

Only two cables, one for temp and one for direction.  The latter will be the one at fault or it may be that the foam covers on the flaps in the heater box are so shot (mine were!) that you have little control left.  Is the direction cable still attached at the back of the heater box?  See threads on matrix removal for a "how to" guide to getting to it all.

thanks for the reply, I took it all apart on Saturday, foam is not brilliant but ok, the cable is definitely at fault as I can see it bending rather than opening the flaps. I have shut the flap with my hand and it all works just on screen now. you have answered my question that there are only 2 cables. Does anyone know where I can buy the cables from?

What did you do in replacing your old foam?

My son's old wetsuit died an honourable death in giving much thin (2mm) neoprene for both sides of the flaps which I attached using carpet adhesive.  As for the cables, I would be heading for the bay of e and keeping an eye open for a new set of sliders and cables, or contact one of the guys on here breaking an old car.  Usually lots going in the classifieds!

3 cables. There is one that closes the feet flap when on windscreen

This. There are the two long ones, black and blue, that go under the heater box and the third, shorter black cable that controls up/down flow. This is on the driver's side of the heater box.

Think I saw cables on vw heritage site whilst I was searching for a cable clip. I managed to bend mine back and they work ok I just had to free up the slider in the dash.
