No technology is foolproof so I'd rather have a key with me safe in the knowledge that if the system ever goes tits up and I can still use the car and not have to walk 13 miles up the road

Fair point - but you have to accept the irony of a 'keyless' system that has a key as its vital component.

Not sure other products would get away with it - cordless phones (with ahem, a cord) waterless car shapoo (just mix it with water sir).

Keyless car (please ensure you have the key with you sir).....  :whistle:

To be fair,  the keyless system doesn't rely on you having the "key", its the fob that has the gubbins to make it all work.  If it made you feel better you could take the "key" out of the fob and have it truly keyless  :laugh:

Keyless for me is definately the one option that has added a really premium feel to the car.  Worth it just for the stop/start button  :smiley:

How easy is it to remove the key bit from the fob?  :rolleyes:

The system is a great idea - just not executed with the 100% thoroughness of thought many other aspects of VW design are... :undecided:

Why would you want to remove the key :huh:. If the system failed and you didn't have the key you would be screwed

If the system failed and we used the key to get into the car - would the stop/start still work or would we be ultimately screwed anyway as there is no normal key ignition?

The manual states that if the starter button fails (or the battery in the keyfob is low?), you should hold the keyfob up against the steering column and it'll start this way.

Yes but if you don't have the key how do you get into the car in the first place  :whistle: :whistle:
