Beam Assist
« on: 19 October 2013, 10:51 »
Hi,

My car has beam assist fitted but using it I don't fee it is quick enough to avoid glaring other drivers...

Using it on a dual carriage way got a few flashed from a few lorries so just turned it off.

What are your experiences..

Tried searching the forum but found nothing.

Mike

Hi Mike, this is exactly why I didn't spec it on my car. Tech too far if you ask me! If the system can't react as quick as human instinct people will start flashing you to dip your main beam - which totally defeats to point on buying the system.

Sorry to hear but I feared it would work out this way.

My Mercedes E-Class Coupe had Beam Assist and you could not rely on it to work in every circumstance. So I stopped using it. However I have specified it for my GTI as it is a reasonable cost option.

I've got high beam assist (BMW) and it was the biggest surprise to me in that it's the best option I picked.  Very reliable and massively faster than I could react myself.

I suggest two things:
1. Check the windscreen is clean where the camera is.  If there is a layer of dirt that might impair its operation.
2. Has it been setup right?  Can the dealer check?  If the lens is out of focus or something then perhaps the software struggles to interpret the blurred image and is slower to react.

Off my experience I see no reason why it shouldn't be as good as you expected it to be.  Good luck.

I have high beam assist and it works very well . it dips the lights if it picks up a street light or a car ahead .it has even dipped the light after getting a reflection of a large road sign on my side of the road
never had any problem with traffic coming the other way even on dual carriage ways

Hello Mike.

I've used the beam assist on an Audi A1 in the past on country roads and found it to be really quick at reacting.  I'd definitely agree with the points made about checking the windscreen is clean for the sensor and if that doesn't help get the dealer to have a look.

The Mrs. has this on her new Leon FR. I can also confirm it is very quick at changing from dipped to full and vice versa. I'm assuming that the tech on the FR will be identical to that of the Golf. Maybe get the dealer to have a look?
