Help Needed For Removing E + GB
« on: 29 September 2013, 19:16 »
Hi Folks was wondering if you could give me some advice?

I have just bought myself a 1986 MK2 GTi Golf totally original that has been stored in a garage for the past 13 years.

Ive eventually got it running and now I'm gonna need to get the obvious done. (All filters oils ETC) I really wanna get the cambelt done and clutch as it has 126,000 miles and only the belt was done at 60,000.

So back to the point does anyone know the best way to remove the engine and gearbox from the car? Altho i dont have a engine lift. i removed the motor and gearbox from a mondeo 5 months ago by lifting the car and placing the motor on a DIY rolling trolley and rolled the engine from the car.

At the moment the Golf has had the front end stripped and before i take any auxiliaries off making the golf non running, i wanted to know if: 1) this is a good idea at all w/o engine lift and 2) can the gearbox be removed easier to do the clutch and have a garage do the cam belt?

I'm presuming the Exhaust manifolds gonna be awkward (tips ha)
Drive shafts and other bits that i don't know.

I don't mind tackling the job if its fairly simple or to just service and sell on as that's gonna be the main outcome but fancy a little project these next few weeks :)

thanks guys lance

if you've got a garage are there any nice beams above the car, 1st engine i ever remove i did by jacking the car right up. tieing the engine to rafter with some rope  then lowering and pushing back the car.
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

I pulled mine out on the road but undone the downpipe at the middle and just rolled car back.

It's not a hard job!  Release downpipe, driveshafts, shift rods, two rear mounts, front cross-member at the sides and various other connectors, jack the back of the  motor up a bit and drag out, or roll the car back.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

I removed my engine and put the ABF in without a hoist. The whole front comes off so it can be pulled out. Back in is a bit more tricky, a couple of jacks and plenty of blocks of wood were needed in my case.

Rent/buy an engine crane. I just bought a Clarke off Machine Mart. I had a band stand style thing with a hoist which I thought was fine until I used a proper one. So much easier aren't the words!

Where all my moneys went.

If you do go down the engine crane route its probably worth mentioning that it may well work out cheaper to buy one and then sell it when your done than renting it.

Thanks everyone for your replies! Since my post i decided to go straight ahead and take the engine and gearbox out! Done virtually exact same as a few replies on here! Just disconnected all auxillaries, keep drive shafts on just disconnected from the hubs, fully stripped the front end then disconnect the manifold by taking it direct off the engine with it still attached to the downpipe then a cheapo jack in the centre and simply rolled out!! Happy days! Now to do my other bits! Again thanks folks
