Retro fit reversing camera
« on: 19 September 2013, 10:40 »
On a different forum for the Mk5 I remember seeing posts about retro fitting the reversing camera from the Mk6 to the Mk5.

There were lots of cables and things involved for this but I suspect for the Mk7 it would be a lot simpler, perhaps even as straight forward as buying a replacement rear badge mechanism with camera and re-coding by VAG COM?

Given the fact that the option on the price list wasn't expensive it has to be pretty close to plug and play.

FYI here's a guide on the other forum http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,10027.0.html

Anybody got inside knowledge on this or planning to give it a go?

After a while these things start appearing on ebay so I guess those of us without camera - myself included - can do this little mod a few months down the line...

It was a cheap option on the mk6 but it was still a lot if work to retrofit and far from plug and play! I would imagine you'll still need to run the wiring loom from the badge to the head unit etc? It won't be easy.

It was relatively cheap in the MK5 and MK6 (not as cheap as factory fit though), but it still involved a fair bit of DIY - new rear badge and having to route wiring from the bootlid all the way to the headunit. In the MKV it was even tougher as the camera badge didn't fit without some creative cutting of metal! Not a job for the faint hearted... I'd be amazed if the wiring was there in the MK7 and it was as simple as plug and play. VW never do that.

The MK7 media systems are a bit of an unknown quantity compared to the RCD/RNS units of before. Apparently most of the wiring is in the glovebox (along with the CD player / SD slots) and the media screen is just that - a screen. So who knows where you need to wire the camera to? It'll be interesting to see a write up of someone attempting it! Pulling interior trim and dashboards apart is not a job I relish.

I used these guys for my rns510:

they were good but as you can see the option is expensive unless you diy.

I needed some help a few weeks ago for another issue and none of the oem guys i contacted had the vagcom for the mk7 yet.

Might have changed since then

Rear view camera is definitely not just a new rear badge and a bit of coding. Needs a new wiring loom front to back, new rear badge and then interior panels removing. You might possibly have to splice your lovely new wiring to power the camera too.

Media stuff is now running on fibre optics aswell as wiring and all units are coded so if fibre breaks you special equipment to diagnose and repair
