Key fob
« on: 13 September 2013, 00:37 »
Hey.

I thought all the GTI and GTD key fobs were supposed to be branded with the relevant logo on the key.

I test drove a GTD at the weekend and it was just a plane VW key. Was this perhaps as it was fitted with a start/stop button or have they changed the keys already?

Cheers
Neil

Funny you should mention this. They come with a GTI/GTD engraved logo on the silver part of the key fob. The only problem was that my dealer hadn't bothered swapping them for the bog standard silver attachment. The GTI attachments were found in with my handbook. I went to ask the dealer to change it over for me but they couldn't as you need the smallest torx screwdriver in the world to remove the basic silver attachment which they didn't have.

I've not done it yet but ill need to nip down to B & Q to see if I can get hold of an appropriate screwdriver

Both mine were fitted when I got mine and the dealer handed me a spare to give to my dad as GTI/GTD was shipping with just one attachment for early deliveries (so I was told). You'll need to split the key as you would for changing the battery and screw the attachment base in before snapping the key halves back together.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Yep, but its not a straightforward Philips screwdriver job unfortunately. Will need to go and buy a torx one which is annoying

As Craig says, for some inexplicable reason, all the GTI and GTD key fobs ship from the factory in standard form, but have the special logo bits separate in the box of bits in the boot. Dealers usually fit them (I know he has fitted mien since I first went to look at the car).

The Demo I drove didn't have any silver part on it, it looked like it was from a boggo Up! or something. Maybe they didn't bother for the demonstrators.

When I picked mine up it had the standard non-GTI keys. I mentioned this to the dealer and he said - 'Good point - it should have the silver GTI part - we don't have any at the moment but I'll get two sent to you from MK and you can get your local dealer to fit it for you'. (The dealer I bought from was 100 miles away).

True to his word I received the parts a couple of days later and he had called my local dealer to arrange the fitting. I turned up and a few minutes later it was done. All very painless.
