Anniversary golf tempreature 1.8t

Hi,

Just bought a 1.8t anniversary. the temperature needle is shooting up to 90 then back down again.

What could this be?

Coolant temp sensor.
I thought Volkswagens were supposed to be reliable?

Does it hit 90 in traffic and drop when you are travelling? If so I reckon Thermostat as well.
