Wife's Y Reg 1.6 MK4 Petrol Golf not starting
« on: 23 August 2013, 14:19 »
Picked up a Y Reg Golf the other day for a few hundred quid as a little runner but today when the wife got in it to come back from her friends it would not start, she turned the key and could hear a wineing noise but got nothing, her friend managed to bump start it for her and she drove it back, when she got back home she turned the engine off and tried again and it would not start.

Any ideas on where to start looking, I hear fuses/relay might be the best place? I am not hugely tecchy and don't have £100's of pounds to sort this out?

Any help would be much appreciated in advance.

the "whine" if faint and from the back will be the fuel pump priming. if so id check to see if your getting any voltage to the starter motor. if your not check fuses and wiring...

if the whine is loud and from the from the front it could be that the starter motor has sh!t its self. in which case id take it off see if theres anything I could do to fix it. guide as to how to fix the starter motor squeal in the maintenance section up at the top of this board will show you how to remove the motor and take it apart.

however if the starter motor is turning, the whine could be due to the starter motor being old and that it needs re-greasing as shown in the thread in the above mentioned. then id check to see if your getting fuel and if there is a spark and start checking that route out.

If the car was bump started, then surely the fuel and spark are fine?
