Dealer Swirls No Valet Request
« on: 28 November 2013, 16:40 »
Hey guys long time lurker here! Thanks for a great resource for info on the Mk7!

Just wanted some advice regarding the above. I've got a GTD on order and have requested that dealer not touch it due to the dreaded swirls. I had a bad experience on a previous new vehicle having huge swirls and no one had touched it apart from dealer.

The dealers response (through email) was

"are you sure? You will have a hard time getting the wax from the factory off."

Has anyone else had an issue with removing the wax from the factory?

Many thanks!

You won't have that much of a hard time getting the wax from the factory off! Order some Auto Finesse ObliTARate from our forum sponsor Waxamomo (20% off at the mo too!) which is a tar and glue remover and will easily dissolve any transport wax or glue left behind from the protective wrappings.

I've asked my supplying dealer to leave all the wraps on the car and to let me take them off myself after collection. It doesn't stop them doing the PDI and I know I will take time and care removing them and the dealers will get them off as quickly as possible, more than likely inflicting minor scratches/swirls into the fresh paint.

I've been a hobby detailer for a good number of years now so if you want any advice, drop me a message!

Agree with Mcmaddy here - dealer is talking out of his a*se.

Most of the major panels (roof, bonnet and tailgate), will have protective plastic or cotton sheets on them, and the side panels don't actually contain any of the old transportation wax of years gone. Any half competent owner who takes a little care over cleaning his (or her) car, will most likely do a better job than the dealers. TBF, most of the time it's not necessarily the fault of the valet guys, but rather the limited time they are given by the dealer to prepare each vehicle.

About the only thing I would let them do (which is what I did), is remove all the transportation sheets, as that way all parties can agree on the condition of the paintwork (scratches, blemishes etc), before signing for the car (saves arguments later).

^^ You're absolutely right there Sootchucker, not their fault at all. All about the time taken, the dealers are under pressure to get cars out the door!

Depends in your trust of the dealers to do a good job. Always had a good standard of prep on the car at both Pulman and Benfield. Whether you peel the films off or the dealers do, they need to see the condition of the bodywork before the car leaves the dealership, or everything found when you peel off the films in your own time is on you. They can't conduct a proper PDI with the films intact when you drive off.

Most dealers will take more care of the car than the VW assembly workers or transport workers will have done.

I see, you make a good point. I haven't had any previous experience with this dealer (Camberly Surrey). I'll have to think more about it closer to pickup..

They can do the technical apsect of the PDI with the protective coverings on. I agree that, if you want to take them off yourself, do so at the dealers and inspect all panels closely before leaving.

I am going this route - the main reason for asking them to leave the protectives on is to prevent the car being washed/polished by them.
