New Angry Golf GTI Owner
« on: 29 May 2013, 15:30 »
Hello

Saw this was a big forum and as I am after a new turbo thought I better join up :)

I recently purchased a golf GTI 2001 with a AUM engine and a stage 1 R Tec map all was well until after 2,000 miles the car started smoking.

Took the sump off and found the bottom end had gone and I had purchased a bit of a lemon. Anyway brought another AUM engine for £250 in "good" condition and then took the sump off and found a crank spacer in the sump like my original so took this back to the seller and managed to get 150/250 back (cash sale) I then recently sourced a third bottom end for £140 in very good nick but my head skimmed for £25 + new gasket (£30) and finally had my engine fixed for around £300

I then added a new cambelt + waterpump + clutch and single flywheel conversion for an additional £175 meaning £475 so far...

Then found out the turbo was f**ked before I dropped engine back in so had to source another found one for £150 it turned up and was nearly as bad as the oringinal and seller has gone quiet so thats £150 gone thats £625 so far and I now need to find another turbo before I can stick my engine in and get the car back on the road!

Oh and my dogbone mount failed and a spring snapped within the 1,000 miles and this was the best example I saw from several at the time so really am rather annoyed now and broke :(

Hope to get to meets once the car is fixed as long as I can find a turbo cheapish as really struggling for funds now due to being ripped off twice (three) including purchasing the car...

Dad has only seen it I asked him to check before accepting but thought a little bit of play in the shaft was okay depsite me saying it could be 1mm max really...

Had it checked by his mate and it has excessive play in the shaft apparantly :(

Will see it myself at the weekend however

Some play in the shaft is normal, reference the s/h engine you have got did you replace the oil pump pick up pipe whilst it was all apart, if not I would get it replaced asap.

Yes I replaced the pipe as that killed the last one most likely as the crank spacers failed and end up in the sump!
