alternator workshop joys

ok, some fun. just got the car back on the road and this happens on the way back from college this evening.
a bit of juddering (may be done to bad swirl pot but not certain on that yet) then about half a mile later i get a beep, alternator workshop flashes on the MFD and battery/alternator warning light is on.
brand new bosch s4 battery yesterday so i know its fine, it`s showing 12.5 volts on multimeter and has plenty of life to crank the engine. tested with engine running and i get fluctuations beween 12.5 and 13.5.
seen this thread, http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=89101.0 so will have a ganders tomorrow when its a little lighter. god i hope its not the alternator itself as im on my arse with no work at the mo.
being a self employed apprentice sucks!
