16v newb... with few random q's... :)

Bought a 1997 mk3 gti 16v today   ... but have to pick it up monday .. but its a 2hr drive home again  

have a few little questions... hope u can help

1.. The car is fitted with a Toad alarm, its obviously CAT1 because it auto immobs in 30 seconds.. (like the clifford I have on my current car) but there is no documentation with it to show what model it is (Where I'm buying it from is going to have a look-see to find a model num if poss).

My insurance company is demanding some kind of proof be sent to them.


Could this be a standard fitting?

Help!?


2.. While I was 'car spotting' in the last few months while waiting to make the jump. I found it very hard to spot 16vs (even though my mate has one.. lol)... I've noticed a 16v that had a silver GTI badge, and a red 16V badge on the front grille, whereas some have nothing but the small 16v on the back (like on my new car..)  Whats standard? Has my grille been replaced, or have I seen people who've tweaked theres?  Is this a year change thing?



3.. Theres an air-con (and a circulate one).. but is it 'proper' air con? couldnt find a difference with the button on/off... but i didnt pay much attention as was on strange roads going rather quickly...

Erm, ill try and he;p for starters

1, Ive got a factory fitted alarm on mine which is a scorpion. even tho i had the instructions for it, it still didnt tell me what it was so i eventualy had to go to a specialist to find out, so, like you, i could inform my insurance company. get a specialist to right down wot it is and then send it to your insurance company.

2, yeah, you dont see many 16v's on the road, especially silver. 16v's came originally with a gti badge which then changed to a 16v badge. i guess many peps tweak em to add they're own style to the car to keep people guessing when they loom large in there mirrors!

3, your air con sounds a bit like mine. never worked since i bought it. check to see if all the relevent fuses are pukka, if yes then its sounds like it just needs re - gassing, like mine. ?50 - ?100

yeah i've never seen a silver one!

theres a -lot- of 5dr dragon green ones out there! (eww!), mines a metallic black 3dr, with the added novelty that its got a full leather interior with heated seats

i'll be taking pics as soon as I have it back here


still confused on the badges thing.. anyone got a decent shot of the front of a 100% stock one?

Just got a call from the garage i'm getting the car from (on a sunday no less whilst i'm eating my roast chicken!) and they've had a nose and the alarm is a Toad AI600.

definitely need that lil 16v badge..

and got it booked in to a local alarm specialist next monday for them to do me a cat1 cert for it.

other than that just needs  CD player
