MOT Advice List Help
« on: 18 April 2013, 18:43 »
Hi Guys, so today I dropped the Golf down at the garage for its annual MOT. Expecting only minor faults given its done 3,000 miles since its last MOT and mostly been garaged  since i thought all would be fine. How wrong was i! If anyone could help on whether the job is an easy DIY one or something i should leave to a garage please let me know along with what i should be paying to repair.

Faults
1) Emission passed but only just - mechanic said breather pipes were squidgy and ran better with oil filler cap removed. Should i look at the cat or breather pipes and can these be cleaned or just replace?
2)Tyres - easy - i have a set of solitudes with good tyres i am refurbing
3)Near side rear brake pipe slightly corroded - easy fix? can i just buy some copper pipe and bend and fit? or do i need parts all from VW
4) new front strut top mounts - never had an easy time removing this on any previous car.
5)Rear shocks rusty and goes over bumps like crap so should replace - where is cheapest for these?
6) offside rear wheel bearing - what are these like as a DIY job or can they be adjusted?

Car is a 2.0 8v 1996

Thanks for any help

I suggest that you take it for MOT where you get a free retest and sort out the failure sheet and take it back as there may be different/new problems that may need to be addressed.

The rest you can sort out after.

1) replace breather pipes. unlikely to be cat if it runs better with oil filler cap removed.
2) no need to say anything to this
3) sand pipe down see how bad it's rusted and paint if there's enough substance left, if not replace
4) fairly simple, you only need a set of spring compressors - can post some instructions if you're struggling. worth checking condition of your shocks... if they are bad would replace them as well, saves you time and upper strut mounts are easier to replace with the whole strut out (rather than compressing springs and then fiddling old one out and new one in)
5) rear shocks should be reasonably cheap, try gsf or ecp (forum discount 25%)
6) rear bearing are easy to replace, you just need a "tool" to get the old ones out and the new ones in
tool = short piece of pipe with suitable diameter - I used a bit of round alu waste trimmed to right diameter on a lathe.
"Adjusting" a worn bearing is rubbish idea. Not going to last and a new FEBI set is 10£ plus a tube of bearing grease = 5£

Clean up the brake pipes with a brillo and wd40. Wheel bearings are cheap and easy to replace. Top mounts are simple if you have an impact gun...otherwise can be a pain. Shocks I would just pick up a set 2nd hand.

Thanks for the advice all. May just save this one from the scrap heap for another year. My big issues are the struts, as my last one needed the nuts drilled as they were rusted on but that was ok as i was fitting an uprated suspension kit. This one though is on a budget so i can get my V6 running right.
