I think I know about mk4's but I am going to need to change my gearbox soon and realised I don't know anything about them really. Now people are going to be like what the hell when I say this but on my car at the moment is a mk3 box (it came with the engine, works but never got round to putting in a mk4 box) Anywho, its on its way out with the diff making a filthy grinding noise in first gear and I swear I can actually hear the gears rattling in the box when just on tick over.

What I wanted to know was the following:

1) I would love to have a 6 speed box but what is the deal with the drive shafts, gear linkage and the actual box itself?

2) Standard Gti boxes are cheap and easy to come by, anything to look out for if I just pick up a normal 5 speed box?

3) Diesel 5 speed boxes.....I know they will fit and work but anybody got one fitted? Whats the ratio like compared to a 5 speed petrol version?

Thanks,

Any help will be appreciated.

Ash

I know the 6 speed ones are expensive, over a grand for a recon unit.,then you'd have to add the shafts etc.

I see you're in South East London, there is a gearbox place in Brockley, called Helical Gearboxes. I'd go and ask them if you're not too far away, ask for Paul.

Why not replace the diff with a limited slip one, your running a fair bit of power, kill 2 birds with one stone?

Nothing wrong with using an 02A on a 1.8t, very common in mk2/3 conversions.

i av a 6 speed box in mine m8, before that i had a mk3 with a 5 speed box , i wouldnt spend a grand on a 6 speed , not much different to a 5 speed box , apart from having to change gears more often . stick with a 5 .

To be honest, im kinda done with spending money on the car, just wanna get a decent mk4 box, paint and then fit it. Im not paying a grand for a gearbox whoever said that is having a laugh, I can get a full 1.8t engine with a box for that!

why not buy a 5 speed and then get this
http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/5-speed-02j-02a-02b-02c-02z-622-658-681-5th-gear-sets.html

that way you a got a cruising gear or just get the 5th from a diesel box if not stick with the 5 speed
