Are all the mk3 airbox's the same
« on: 28 February 2013, 19:48 »
Well I have just got my VR6 and it has the standard airbox.

When I had my 8v I fitted the K&N and never binned the airbox but after looking tound Ive come to the idea of modifying the original airbox but would rather try the one I had from the 8v just in case I fubar it.

So would I able to practice on the 8v one and if all goes well swap them over?

And is there a good guide to the airbox mod

Many thanks.

there's loads of good airbox modding guides about, do a search.

not sure about the vr6 box but I think the 8 and 16v boxes are the same size, the only difference being the lower half.. the 16v has more pipework down there

even though they use the same air filter they are different!

(top half is different, the 8v connects the the air mass meter using 4 bolts, they 16v to air flow meter with a jubilee clip set up)

The ABF airbox has the hot air intake flap and gubbins which you only want to rip out anyway.  8v saves you doing this bit.

VR6's run MAF. The best thing to do is run the top half of it (or any other model you may have - for future reference for those searching the forum, so 8v and VR6 MAF and 16v for air intake temperature sensor), then use an 8v bottom half. Reason being an 8v bottom half will not have the hot air intake at the back so it saves you from not only having to remove all the obstructions the 16v and possibly VR6 bottom halves have, but also from having a big hole at the back once them obstructions are removed, meaning all the nice cold air is going out the back!

8v box (standard)

8v box (modified)

16v box (standard)

So to put it in leymans terms if I swap the bottom of the VR6 airbox for the 8v bottom I wouldn't have to to all the chopping out of the bottom of the airbox.

Have always bought the usual K&N but really wanted an alternative.

Seems quite fortunate I still have the old 8V box

Exactly. Use the 8v bottom and remove the trumpet and open up that intake.
