So the tension wire things on one side of the garage door has been fraying over the past week and snapped last night. £140 quoted to replace them.
Reasonable or attempt it myself?

Price up the cable by diameter and length on ebay or similar, and do it yourself! Its just twisted wire like that found in a throttle or handbrake cable I'm assuming.

Can you not convert it to a motorised set up?

My dad and I tried this, f**king tough job, and very dangerous. The spring, like a torque tube kind of thing, is bloody big, and very strong. Lock your self inside and you'll figure it out. Just get a friend or 2 to help...

Mines on springs you could hold up seven bridge with, but I've got torque bolts through them!
15mm spanner go clock wise and they torque up with no problems. I would switch over to this type of tensioned system its simple and easy, as to where to go and buy a kit from fecK knows? LOL

I think people have died trying to change the wire. That is how much energy is stored in those springs...

Can't motorise it. Gas and electricity meters and pipes on either side just inside the door, and overheard fluorescent tubes.
Will pay the cash then.
