Preventative Maintenance – Mk5 GTI 2008 DSG
« on: 12 February 2013, 09:45 »
Hi

I have a 2008 GTI (DSG) which I have owned from new and has covered around 55,000 miles. I’ve had all the standard stuff done such as the cambelt and water pump last year at 4 years old, also the DSG oil at 40,000 miles. My question is – are there any relatively cheap works that can be carried out to prevent ‘known’ issues that may occur with these cars? My engine is a BWA code. I have heard about replacing the camshaft follower that drives the high pressure fuel pump – do dealers do this as part of standard maintenance or is it something you would have to request?

Thanks
Russ

They do not check it unless prompted to. It doesn't light up the CEL until too late. Without a hpfp upgrade yours should last nearly 100k miles. But I would begin checking before that looking for the black DLC wearing off of the face of it.

Regularly, every 5k miles, I change the oil and filter. Every 10k miles I add injector cleaner and do an intake valve blow-by to keep carbon build-up down. I replace the fuel filter and brake fluid every 25k miles, and replace the coils, plugs, and filter(I clean mine) every 50k miles. I change the dsg fluid and filter every 75k miles. And finally, I change the lpfp at 100k miles.

I have some diy vids if you want to diy:

Thank you for the information, I had a look at the cam follower DIY video and it looks fairly straight forward, I think. Is there a gasket or seal between fuel pump and engine that should/could be changed or is it built into the pump?

FYI, brake fluid changes shouldnt be based around mileage I believe, it should be changed every 2 years, as it collects moisture and hence reducing braking efficiency!

if I had waited until 25k, it would have been 5 years between brake fluid changes, bad news!

My GTi is on 82k now so think ill try and get the cam follower checked. Anyone know where we can get the parts other than dealers or is it not worth hunting around??

Get it from the dealer - around £28. Only other place I saw one was somewhere on the net and it was more expensive than the dealer.
Just found the perfect GTi...
