In the market for a Mk6 GTI
« on: 08 February 2013, 11:19 »
Hi guys,
I am looking in to purchasing a Mk6 GTI. The two most important things to me at the moment are resell value and ease of sale. I will only be owning it for around 9 months until I move back to Australia so I need something that I can shift quickly when i need to and without losing a huge amount of money on. The purchase price isn't of that real concern to me, more the delta between buying and selling.

I understand these requirements probably condradict each other somewhat, but what I guess I am looking for is advice on what I should be looking for in a GTI that makes it attractive to buyers (like myself I guess!). Obviously something in good condition and well maintained is a given, but what about optional extras? Are there any must haves that would make it a better proposition? My personal preferences are below, let me know what you think.
- Colour? (white preferred)
- Leather or plaid seats? (no preference)
- DSG
- RNS Sat Nav? (preferred)
- Parking sensors? (yes)
- Sunroof (nice to have, but probably not important given UK weather :) )
- Build year?

I know this may be down to personal opinion but hoping the experts on here can chip in with some ideas!

Thanks guys.

If you only intend keeping it for a few months and get most of your money back, I'd go for an earlier car, as newer ones will take too big a hit on depreciation.

As it's not going to be a keeper, the only options I would look out for would be 18" Monza Shadows and a RCD510 radio. Anything else would be a bonus, but in terms of selling a car on, to me condition, mileage and history would be far more important than spec. Most options are retro fittable, so not worth paying a premium for.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Everyone has their own preference when it comes to extras, so your choices will probably coincide with someone else's when you sell. Low mileage is obviously a big plus for most buyers [and service history of course]; but I think 18" Monza's, Satnav, xenon's and leather would help resale [But of course would increase the cost initially] The fact you're not keeping it long will minimise depreciation loss anyway.
Buy one you like the spec of and someone else will like it when you sell, that's my opinion.

I would be looking at mk5 GTi's with your criteria as with some careful buying I bet you could almost negate any depreciation and it would be easier to sell as cheaper cars always are.

i'd be looking at mk5 Ed30/Pirellis if only 9 months and you don't want to take an excessive depreciation hit

i'd definitely be looking at a mk5 too for that length of time. An ED30 or Pirelli will fetch strong money and spec doesn't matter as most of that stuff can be added after. Especially an RNS unit which can be sold on to recoup costs at the end of ownership.
You could probably even find one that still has extended warranty on it too.
