http://www.amazon.co.uk/Elements-1TB-Portable-Hard-Drive/dp/B005A97APO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359890188&sr=8-1

or

http://www.ebuyer.com/339425-hitachi-4tb-touro-desk-pro-usb-3-0-hard-drive-0s03504

when you say a lot, what do you actually mean?

I have around 850GB of photos which I consider to be a lot, so a 1.5TB drive is the minimum for me, hence the two links.

1TB is enough for most home users, however you really want your photos backup in two places.

I have one of these;

http://www.ebuyer.com/281915-hp-proliant-turion-ii-n40l-microserver-100-cashback-658553-421?utm_source=google&utm_medium=products

which contains, 3 2TB drives; 1 for movies and non essential files and the other 2 are a RAID 1 array for photos / essential files meaning that both drives would have to fail for the images to be lost.  I also have 2 1TB drives that I use to create a monthly copy which gets stored at my work; meaning even if the house burnt down, the office would have to burn down too.

Basically comes down to how important your photos are for example baby photos, wedding photos, relatives that have passed away etc all memories that can't be replaced.

I got one of these

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00499DMRQ/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00

You can download an app for the iPhone meaning you can upload directly from there and view everything on the drive. Also allows me to stream music from the drive to my phone  :nerd:

No matter what back up drive you get, you'll find that some software to manage it helps after the first dump.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/freefilesync/ is great for looking at whats on your pc vs whats on the backup, if they're not in line, it tells you whats what and only copies over whats missing.

If you want too access the files remotely look into pogoplug typed stuff or western digital drives like Rhys has.

Pogoplug also do 5tb for $5 p/m http://pogoplug.com/
Passat B5.5 2.3 V5 170, with all the extras.

Want some online storage? Click here to sign up for a Dropbox account.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

I have one very similar to the one below but do have it connected into my network so accessible from any machine in the house.
