I didn't think you needed VCDS for that???
You can do it on early cars with a combination of holding the indicator stalk, flashing and turning the ignition on and off (I can't remember exactly, but it's in the handbook) On later cars, there is an option in the lighting section of the vehicle setup menu in the DIS.
You are quite correct.
A friend of mine hires mk6 Golfs frequently and it's the first thing he does when he picks them up.
