I've always stuck with semi in mine which is recommended by VW.

10/40 semi for a healty engine in a road car,
15/40 semi in a tired/tappy engine in a shed
20/50 for a f**ked engine that has no oil pressure and rattels like a tin of bolts

5/50 fully synth for fresh performance engines

haynes only recomend duckhams because there payed by duckhams to do so.     it's fine to use fully synth in the abf engine will be perfectly happy with it.  te fully synth is just a better more stabel oil in theory the engine just dosent realy need that in a road car
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
