Soon as he has a Mondeo and wants an economical automatic for £7-8k, I would suggest this 2009 Ford Focus Titanium Diesel. Good engine, fair levels of equipment, not bad to drive and is essentially a very new car. I'd assume being two owners that it is a former demonstrator or originally purchased by the dealership. Insurance and tax will also be affordable, along with fuel economy. All in all, a practical nearly new car which will suit his needs.
