coilover question!
« on: 20 December 2012, 20:52 »
I couldn't get my front coilovers (Jom) from my old golf cos I had no swan spanner or Allen key so I had to cut the top mounts to get em out. now I can't get the remains of the top mount off the coilovers cos the nuts are so tight the Allen bolt has sheared! anyone got any ideas how I can undo the bolt!? I need to grip the shaft with something cos when I turn the nut the whole shaft moves. hope this makes sense. any help would be awesome!

Prettty sure it shouldve used a torx drived not allen key. that why its proberbly rounded. (Or atleast most coilovers ive seen atr torx)

yeah as said above. windy gun will take it off streight away.

could always try drilling a hole into the shaft near the top. sticking a pin through and holding the pin while undo ing the nut. however not sure how much that would weaken it?

No they are 7mm allen key a torx will twist or snap.

As said impact gun might get them off. Also coat them in plus gas over night.

Do not grip the shaft with anything because it will damage it then kill your seal. Plus it will just spin anyway.

yeah they're defo allen (there's a tiny torx bolt inside the allen bolt tho, not sure what that's for). i'll take em to work tomorrow and have a go with the windy gun then, hope that'll work.

what's plus gas?

Did you use a proper allen wrench, or a simple 7mm key from a set? I went through 2 allen keys (Twisted round a few times!), then bought a 7mm wrench which worked fine (needed the use of a large ring ended spanner aswel for leverage)

Also, a socket with a hex top, and a strong enough spanner to fit the hex top should do it...(allen wrench goes through the top of the socket). If the 7mm 'hole' is buggered though.....

As said though, local fitters should sort it, but you'll have to drive back with them loose when it comes to putting them back on something...
