Suspension problem
« on: 17 November 2012, 15:47 »
Hi everyone
I realise this is not a Golf GTi problem but my daughter has problem on her 2011 Polo with only 8000 miles on the clock and requesting any help.

Fault:
Knocking sound from rear of car, not a metal to metal sound but more thud like, can hear it all the time especially on speed bumps, etc...but could be anywhere as you know that all sounds tend to travel through bodywork
Sounds like its in the boot but all been checked and no problems found.

Have managed to get car to dealer and short test drive, service department bloke tells me the front suspension links arms are 'gone'..........never even looked at the car??

For a car she has had from new and only 8000 miles on the clock i find this unbelievable that a major component has failed.
Is this a common problem on new Polos, what about the Golfs, is this a known point of failure.

It will probably be a bush of some description in the rear suspension. Easily fixed.

is the spare wheel/jack/tool kit secure?

make sure all that stuff is good and seats are locked upright

i would say its more likely the spare wheel or if not something simple a bush or exhaust or something

Finally got it fixed, but took two trips to VW dealer.
Car went in and the front suspension link arms were replaced, car test driven by technician and signed off as ok, picked car up that evening and never even got onto main road before the knocking, banging started.

Returned to dealer who was a bit embarrassed to say the least, anyway got booked in for three days later and after test drive a different technician identified the noise was either rear shocks, rear top mounts or both.
Happy days the fault was near side rear shock and top mount, both replaced and car as good as new.

Thanks for initial replies even though it was a Polo.

Cheers

Mike
