but what do you hope to actually gain from all this mate?

You will gain speed in each gear yes, but you could always just change gear couldn't you? to the next one, rather than changing the box internals!

It'll make the car slightly more economical, and definitely slower to accelerate.

The only real gain I can see is the taller 6th for cruising.

This. Plus doing it now gives me more scope for the future, if I were to change my mind and stick more power into the car at some point it would be worth while as the standard box is geared down to no more than 154mph, the ratios them selves arn't capable of much more!

And its just the final drive I am thinking of changing now so it would only be 5th and 6th which would accelerate slower but the longer ratio of 5th would probably benefit power from what it is now as 4th and 5th are geared very closely so you are almost straight up to 6th when after changing up to 5th with the standard box.

I suppose if i do it and hate it I could always swap the box with someone who has FI on there car with a standard box

so in essence can this be done as i am wanting to get my 6th gear changed so at 70 it sits at lower revs than it is at the moment. but i have no idea how i would go about this.
