MK3 Cuts Out After Starting
« on: 05 December 2012, 18:47 »
Hi all.

Looking for some advice. i just bought a MK3 8 valve gti yesterday (R reg) which had been stood for 6 months. Overall very tidy car inside and out but when I went to start it, it was rough to start and then fired..if I kept the revs up it sounded fine but as soon as the revs dropped off it sounded rough again before the revs suddenly dropped off and it dies. Happens everytime and I have checked the plugs, leads, distributor etc and all fine. I thought it might be the coil but was told it could be the throttle valve potentiometer instead.

Some advice would be very welcomed along with any advice to fix.

You need to do a advanced search in the mk3 and mk3 maintenance section for car stalling.

It can be a number of things so hopefully reading old post with same symptoms as yours will help solve it.

I will try and help.

Does it only cut out when cold? Does it still cut out when hot?
Things to check/replace. Temp sensors, relay #30 and #167. Clean out throttle body. Crank position sensor.
vac line to ecu
All these things give the same problem so you really need to be accurate with your description

Thanks for the reply. I will check the forums as suggested. I've not had it running enough to get it nice and hot since it keeps cutting out. It did warm up for a few mins and idled fine for 20 seconds or so then the revs just suddenly dropped and it cut out. This happened each time I started it. Fine with foot down then idled ok then just suddenly cuts out almost instantly.

I'll also check the things you suggest. It has been stood for 6 months outside so I'll start with cleaning out the throttle body then work from there. Thanks again for the response.

Get it hot. Temp at 90 and oil over 70 then tell me what happens
