« on: 13 November 2012, 11:41 »
Hi

I am after a diesel estate car that most importantly is reliable and good on fuel, ive never owned a diesel vw before only petrols and i hear there is a few variations of the diesel engines, can anybody give me a quick run down of the different diesel engines and which one is the most reliable? and any specific things to look out for on these cars when buying other than the regular stuff you would check for on any other car?

cheers guys

I bought a Passat estate sport TDI 130 03plate (B5.5 but told its no different than B5) for the wife a few weeks ago. And i can honestly say its brilliant, so much torque and so comfortable. Only getting 40 odd mpg around town when having to keep stopping and starting but thats 500 miles off a full tank, on the motorway its up in the 60's.

Ive done a bit of research on the ukpassat forum and everyone is in agreement that the 130bhp engine is the one to go for as appose to the 100bhp one and nothing that stands out as far as what to look for compared to any other car except the "plenum chamber" (top of engine bay closest to windscreen) has 2 drainage holes you need to check regulary as if these gets blocked then water collects and floods the footwells and takes all the electrics out with it. So check all the electrics work and central locking and no wet smelling interior. Other than that and usual things to avoid when buying 2nd hand cars then these cars are good for 200k miles.

Do your research on the ukpassats forum and check the reviews on whatcar.com as well and you'll be fine. Good luck

I have a non mapped  :lipsrsealed: 1.9TDI A4 B5 Estate and for what it is, it goes like the clappers! Average 45+ on fuel (carrying around 90 on motorways etc). Just keep on top of servicing and clean out the EGR now and then and you will be laughing!
