Hand-held or tripod-mounted?

If you're shooting mounted you could probably stop down to get even crisper.

HDR isn't too over-done, either - so looks tidy.

the second one (the water front) is really nice, great toning and a smooth HDR.  The first one suffers quite a few of the common HDR problems e.g the glow around the edges and mainly the differnece in tones where the mask / guide lines cut the sky up.

Given how flat the sky is id have to wonder if HDR is even needed for that photo

It was the shadows I wanted to bring out, it was quite dark, step it up and the sky blew out. And they were hand held.

How many bracketed shots? Or HDR from one RAW file?

I would agree that the second one is better, the water tones and reflections are good.
The first one being slightly overdone and I would say suffering from having too much space to the right, detracting from the red ship, which is presumably the focus of the picture.

Disagree with the comp of the ship picture as the line of the boat leads the eye to the same point of the path...kind keeps the eye moving to the building in the background. Depends if the ship is the sole focus. Not all shots have to be one focus.  Slightly over cooked compared to the reflection shot though still tamer than the landscapes you did a while back tho
