Mk3 Golf gti 2.0 8v cutting out at idle when cold
« on: 24 October 2012, 20:24 »
Hi all,

Issue 1

Appreciate if this has already been written about but new here and would appreciate any advice. I have just purchased my first Golf, a mk3 2.0 gti 8v 1997. Turns over but cuts out as idling too low and even after driving it still cuts out at low revs until it has warmed up, it is worse when cold but once warmed up runs lovely and idles quietly just under 1000 revs. Started her after work today, cut out after low idle then after holding low revs for a few minutes she was fine all the way home, even when idling low at a junction a few minutes after pulling away (which she cut out at a few times at lights etc this morning).

I have read of a few issues but hoping mine is just because the auto choke sensor (or the thingmabob) that controls the fuel/ temp is iffy.

Issue 2

My brake (!) light and abs light are always on. The garage checked the pads (she passes her latest MOT in Aug 2012 with no advisory's) and hooked it up to the computer and showed no issues. The guy topped up the brake fluid and fiddled about with a sensor of the top of it, checked the handbrake and beneath its cover.....have been advised also that it could be one of the wheel sensors and getting an indi check done.

Any replies ideas welcome and loving being a Golf owner

You've probably sorted it by now, but the problem will be the cold start valve which provides a slightly richer fuel mix until the engine has warmed up.
