MikeyBikeys mk1 Golf GTI Cabrio
« on: 03 November 2012, 12:50 »
I have 1987 mk1 gti convertible.

I'm new to golfs but not new to old cars. I run a 1972 3 litre scimitar as a day car. The golf is the summer fun car.

According to my dim memory, the mk2 golf started in 1983 but VW didn't make a MK2 convertible and so the Mk1 was produced until 1991 or thereabouts.

But did that also apply to mechanicals. (Mine is 5 speed gearbox and 1800 engine, number DX122xxx)

Is she running mk1 shape but mk2 mechanicals. Or am i talking complete rubbish

she will be running mk1 mechs mate, haynes manual no726 brown in colour is the one you want as this covers all including cabby. your engine should be running kjet fuel injection, later ones are digifant i think.
looking very tidy, first up give it a good service and replace all vacuum hoses. theres alot of info on here and mk1 owners club.
they are a great car and quite practical day to day, ive used mine as a daily for the last 3 years. a point to note, vw's like being used, the more use and good servicing they get the more reliable they are

Thanks. She gets used most days and since we've had here the my daughter and here boyfriend did a great body resto, including new wing an drivers door. details here.

http://rjwebb.co.uk/golfrgallery.html

Also done new leather interior, new suspension and BBS's and all the mechanicals have been 'sorted' including new clutch / cable / cam belt etc

My daughters had to move up country and so I'm now looking after it. Will take your advice and run through all the vacuum stuff. Also a lot of the wires are brittle and snapping so will loook at those, and finally, she's develoepd a pig of a misfire when cold.

After looking at this brilliant site

http://www.auto-solve.com/mech_inj.htm

I now understand the K tronic system and thinks its the warm up regulator although I'll do some searches on this site to confirm. Thanks
