roof rail removal???? mk3 estate
« on: 14 October 2012, 15:11 »
Anyone removed roof rails from a mk3 estate before?

looks easy to do by removing head lining and im guessing its just a case of unscrewing them from the underside but how do i plug the holes thats left behind?

kempie's head lining had 3 plugs down each side? pop them off that you could get to the bolts

See if a lower spec model was available without them if so that should provide the blaking plugs you need.

I don't think I have seen one without them but they will have made a base model for one market or another.

Ive just had a pretty througher look on Google and it would seem that some standard ones haven't got them fitted but there are definetely more with them on so you could be in luck with getting blanking plugs.

can be done as i removed the roof rails on mine. as said you have 3 blanking covers on the headlining by the grab handles on the inside of the car, pop these off and there are 10mm nuts that hold the roof rail to the car. after you remove the rails you have holes in the roof that you need to seal up with silicone. also lover spec estates have no roof rails so you need the rain/roof strip from those cars to fit to yours as when you remove the roof rails you end up with holes in these. if you cant find an estate with no roof rails then you can get two sets of rain/roof strips from a 5 door hatchback. you need two sets which you cut and join up to make long enough to fit estate. hope that all makes sense
