non starting golf gti 16v
« on: 12 July 2005, 11:29 »
Hi

Can anyone help

I have a 1991 H reg 16v gti which will not start
When I turn the key it fires on all 4 cylinders then dies straight away
I have checked that there is a good spark from the coil and that there is petrol coming up the injectors.
I have also checked the distributor cap and that all seems good too
I have checked the thermotime switch and also the cold start switch however I have not taken out the valve to see if that is OK. The only other thing that has come to mind is the ECU but I do not know where this is on the car

Can any one give any suggestions

Thxs

could it be the ISV?
are you getting enough fuel through??
or could it be a timing problem?

is that when you release the key ?

if so , change ignition barrel .

the ISV wont cause the car to not start up / keep running unless its _very_ lumpy at idle which would probably be due to something else.

I have also tried to keep the ignition key fully rotated and this allows the engine to run on slightly longerthen it dies again.
I have run a cable from the coil positive to the battery positive as per Haynes manual to see if it is the ballest resistor but alas it is not
any more suggestions welcome

Try disconnecting one by one all the eletrical connections in the engine bay the plastic ones that have a metal holder on them!

there is one by the throttle, one on the over run, the warm up regulator etc

try and see if anyone either helps or remains the same! this helpped me alot on my probs!
