just bought a mk3 gti p reg
« on: 12 October 2012, 18:54 »
Hi everyone just signed up as I've just bought a Gti again.

Getting on a bit, but only had 2 owners and 159k miles, been looked after, all original. Has air con too which was a nice surprise.

It's a dark blue colour, but I don't think its mystic blue. I'm sure mystic blue was a more metallic paint.

I need a couple of parts for it, just the o/s mirror glass, loads on ebay but I think a lot of the cheap ones are just ones to stick on top. I need one to fit the plastic connection as the existing glass is not there. It's electric mirrors, not sure if they are heated or not.

I also need the n/s mirror casing, which is colour coded so first need to know what paint code I have.

Finally one of the small fog lights lower down at the front is missing. It's one of the middle ones, a clear lens.

If anyone can help please write back.

It's a good car to drive, feels very solid and powerful. I noticed more power in 3rd and 4th than I was expecting. The mk2 gti's I've had were a bit quicker in 1st and 2nd but the 2L lump in this mk3 has the torque at higher speeds.

Welcome along.

1. If its got bent jacking points it probably has no sills, do a good search for rust under all the trims while your there check you have some floor left particularly around the bungs. floor is easy to weld up, sills are a death sentence unless you are a welder or connected to one.

2, buy one of these (port under cover by ashtray), and use the search function on this site as most of the bugs are easy fixes
http://www.talktomycar.co.uk/products/codereaders/mj002.htm

3. It wont go any faster for less than £1000 (and that's not adding together you halfords bill )
Do search this subject for endless hours of 8 vs 16v and 10 bhp from an airbox threads

4. It will look good lowered but it will handle like sh!te unless you spend £££

5. Parts are cheap, eurocarparts is your friend and you can get all your bits there, paint code is under the carpet by the spare

6. Search Vento front end and badge less grills.

7. Speak to Brad or T shirt about turbo's and 20vt conversions

8. Its better than a Mk4 and you will be unhappy if you sell it and buy one, breaking it might make you more money but is hassle for little gain if you don't have a place to store it.

That should cover you for a bit

First of all i wouldnt use Euro's too much, my store can never seem to get stuff right. You ask for the better product and they will give you the cheaper one. I did find out however that some of the VW parts you can buy from euros at half the price (track rods and ends for example are made by TRW vw charge £106 a side plus VAT euros was £55). Do your research on what companies VW use for various parts and buy them else where if you dont want the insane prices.
Paint code is under the boot carpet, also underneath the paint code on the same sticker are loads of little codes (x2b,c2b,j1p as an example) they are your factory fitted options like heated seats, recaro seats, heated mirrors ect. A few pages back there is a link to a website you can put the codes in to diagnose them and find out what you have/should have.
The missing part from the bumper is a towing eye blank, go to the local scrappy and pick one up. Or ebay mk3 golf towing eye blank. Same with the mirror.
Apart from that, excatly what VW BUSH has said!
