1995 16v probs
« on: 10 October 2012, 17:52 »
Hi All,

I am new to this site, after picking up a 1995 16 gti a couple of weeks ago. Only done 58k, fsh, and tons of history so I couldn't resist!!!

Only thing is the car has started to what seems like a mis fire and being sluggish pulling up hills, and lumpy on tickover. I took it to my local garage, who looked through everything, and seem to think its the dizzie, as it looks as if leads, plugs, coil etc have been replaced recently. They Took it for a drive and over 4k revs it was fine. Does this sound like the dizzie to you guys?

Cheers in advance!!!!

Try these two;

1. Pull off air intake pipe to expose the throttle body. Go to your local car shop and buy some carburettor/air intake cleaner, and using that + a cloth clean the throttle body. It's most likely full of oil from the breathers. It's one of the most common problems with the Mk3's. You can opt to remove the throttle body to give it an even better clean around those hard to reach areas, it's only 4 bolts, throttle cable and a couple of vac pipes.

2. Remove the ISV. It's located under the plastic cover that supports the 4 HT leads. It's a cylindrical shape, in aluminium. Inside will again be caked in oil from the breathers. Pull it off from it's pipes and from the inlet manifold and using the same carb/air intake cleaner and this time a toothbrush or whatever you find easiest, clean as much as you can out. You could connect the pins to a 12v battery to spin the ISV while it's in a work bench, while it's full of cleaner, that way it'll wash it nicely inside. Once the fluid has evaporated, spray some WD40 inside to relubricate the parts, as carb cleaner dries everything out. Reconnect and see if either of the two solutions above help.

Idle stabilization valve. Can also be called ICV, Idle control valve.
