High Mileage TDi's
« on: 03 October 2012, 20:14 »
Anything to worry about? Going to see an A3 130tdi tomorrow with 128k on. Its a 51 plate so only just above average.

I know theyre meant to be 'bulletproof' but surely some things will be ready to give up.

Cheers.

128k, high milage  Mines just about to turn over to 180k

Ummm

Clutch and flywheel
Turbo
Camshafts
Worn boost pipes

Then the usual suspension bushes, rear beam bushes, tie rod ends and all the other mk4 common faults...

Flywheel.. check for vibration through the clutch? Turbo.. excessive black smoke?

Guess theres no real way to test the cams is there  :undecided:

The rest i'll check anyway. Knocks bangs rattles. Oil round boost hoses ect.

So it wouldnt worry you buying one at that mileage? My 1.8T is only on 70k so its a bit of a jump.

It wouldn't bother me if its been well looked after and had parts replaced as and when.

Flywheel juddering on pull off and plant the accelerator in 4th to check for clutch slip and excessive vibrations.

Black smoke is signs of a boost leak and blue smoke is signs of the turbo burning oil.

Cam 'should' be alright, with out taking the rocker cover off you cant check them. Just listen out for clicking noises coming from the engine.
