Yep, I had this problem too, pull up to traffic lights, looking GOOD....except for Golf revving its nuts off (2000 RPM), NOT COOL. makes busy town centre driving interesting too......  SO.....I tried all the normal things, adjusted grub screw, check O ring thingy behind it-no difference. Tried blocking off the hole it sits in (and I mean AIRTIGHT) not much difference, tried bashing idle valve, tried bashing everything........

Whats this....a small grub screw at the base of the throttle stop assembly....backed it off several turns, guess what ? Car now idles perfectly!!!! Sometimes the simple things work!!!

NB Pulled up to traffic lights today....same thing, popped the bonnet, grub screw had SCREWED ITSELF BACK IN. Now off to store for some Loctite....

Cheers, Mark.

any air breather pipes split? check the rubber bung that seals the breather box to the rocker cover.

clean the inlet manifold and the isv.
