not going into first every so often wat can it be

hi Ive got a Mk3 golf gti 2.0 l 16 valve and every so often its will not go into first and if it does go into first it will be hard to put it in first i changed the clutch slave cylinder and that helped it alot big time not doing it as often  i was wondering if it could need the vw tool for setting the gearlinks up Ive got a old one from my mk2 tool that i got of ebay but my mk3 is a cable change so i dont no if it could set the gearstick up with the mk2 toll or is the tool diffrent thanks hope someone can help

I have had this problem recently but in my case all it took was a bit of elbow on the gear linkage and a can of WD40 and a tub of grease try that first ,seeing as you have changed the slave check the master cylinder as well ,fingers crossed the clutch release mech is not getting worn.
