Replacing fuel line - Dropping fuel tank?
« on: 30 July 2012, 10:00 »
Hi all, I'm replacing the fuel line from the tank to filter side, ive heard i have to drop the tank slightly to get the clip up to the sender. I was just after some tips on how to go about this if anyone has done this before? (I don't really want to blow myself up )

Cheers

pig of a job i had to do it on mine, i snapped the connector when changing the fuel filter! just remember remove fuse 28 (fuel pump relay) also be careful when removing the fuel tank straps as mine were rusty and one snapped so replaced them both with new ones.

Thanks for the reply, so is it just a case of undoing the straps and lowering down? (obviously sounds easier than it is) I read somewhere that the rear twist beam needs dropping too?

Cheers

you only need to drop the rear beam if you removing the tank completely.

another little tip is tie the new line around the old line and pull the new line through and when pushing the tank back up use a long piece of wood in-between the jack and tank to push it back up evenly.

Great thanks for your help, I'm a bit of a newbie but trying to give everything a go before admitting defeat! Will the the tank filler neck need undoing for the drop or should it have a bit of give? my new line comes tomorrow so I will have a go then and let you know how it goes. It would be so much easier if vw did replacement clips...

I managed to do it with only dropping the tank a few inches.  The filler didnt have to be undone.
