whats going on with my heater blower speed dial?

was just driving back from bletchley turned the blower on to speed 2 to get abit of cool air. then turned it up to 3 and noticed the dial was really hot. turn it off and it cools down. turn it on no matter what setting and it heats up.

just took the dial face and surround off to have a look. and the mech as most probably no is a copper bit that makes contact with another one.
as shown in the pics bellow. when ever they make contact (switched on the copper heats up very hot.

any ideas?

Could be one of 2 things I think.

1. Your switch is not making the proper contact.
2. Your fan motor is pulling more current than it should.

I would start with a trip to the scrappy for another switch - the cheapest option. Also - I don't know where the fan resistor is on the Golf. If it is in the switch then running position 4 will bypass the resistance and it should run cool. If it runs cool, it points to the switch. If it runs hot it points to the fan. This only works if the resistor is in the switch though.

I guess a blocked pollen filter could cause the fan to struggle. Try pulling that out and see if it improves things.

the resistor is on the passagners side under the dash (by the motor) you will need to remove the foam thing and you should see it with 3 or 4 wires. If it still stays hot then change the control switch, not a hard job just make sure you lable the cables. A friend of my had a simular problem but his heaters would only work on 4 we found out that it was the copper on  contol knob so changed the whole control switch.

yeah its the copper on the control knob on mine that is getting hot.

ok removed my pollen filter as it was totaly blocked and full of crap.
tested the heater dial on speed 4 with pollen filter removed and it still gets hot.

so what do you recon its the dial?

i tried cleaning the copper parts and its seems to not be as hot but still heating up.
