just wondering where does the switch to move them go? I can't see anywhere it possibly could go.

My car has factory fitted electric mirrors and the switch for them is in the door panel, look where the triangular mirror cover is on the inside of the door.

my switch sits about an inch under the black plastic top of the door panel, where its material and Is in line with the edge of the triangle.

Hope that makes sense if not I'll take a pic and send you it.

On the subject of electric wing mirrors, I found out why mine doesn't work.
There isn't one.

The drivers side mirror has connection for the heated mirror, but there are no wires, no motor and the inside looks more like the remote operated one (without the bellows), the passenger side works (or did until I forgot to reconnect the cables from the switch :-[ )

So what do I need to get hold of to replace the drivers side with an electric one, would I be able to just get a motor and glass (housing) and reconnect through the existing wing mirror casing? (I realise that I'm going to have to get cabling to it, but from looking at the inside of the door I believe it's there.

Suppose I should open up the passenger side and see what I've got.

If your car has the switch in the drivers door then it sounds to me like the car had both electric mirrors and one was damaged so it was replaced with a normal bellows adjust type one. Probably due to how much VW would want for one.

Not sure as to what you would need, I would myself try to source the whole thing and just bolt it on and plug it in job done.
