Problems with the Car Horn!!!!!
« on: 29 June 2012, 11:22 »
Well, I finally gave the golf its first big run after the cylinder head rebuild. Did 269 miles, and was spot on. Very happy.

I hit horrendous rain on the west coast near Oban. Never driven in rain like it!! I was down to about 30 mph in convoy with other cars.

I am thinking there could be water ingress near the horn under the passenger wheel?

Up shot was car horn now keeps blowing fuses, relay clicks in ok. I am getting 10.3 volts between black and brown wire for the horn behind the steering wheel. As soon as I join the black and brown wire the horn works-albeit it sounds pathetic and then then the 10 amp fuse will blow.

Any suggestions and help appreciated!

I am not fond of electrickery at all !!

Sounds like water may be shorting the horn out, and drawing over current, hence fuse blowing. Whip horn off and stick it in airing cupboard, or buy some contact cleaner and give it a good blast out.

Disconnect the wiring at the horn itself. Then try. If the fuse doesn't blow, it's the horn at fault. If the fuse blows it's a wiring fault. It could be water in a connector or the like. You can drive out the water with WD 40

Well, I disconnected the low tone horn, and the fuse didn't blow. Currently using the high tone horn in the grill and will be ordering a new horn soon. At least it is legal, even if the high pitch horn is not the best :)

Thanks for the advice.
