fitting 17s
« on: 27 September 2003, 20:45 »

im thinkin of gettin the oz racing Super Leggera (205-40-17)

will they fit? do i need arch work. if i decide to lower and need arch work what actualy needs to be done?

im kinda deciding whether i should get 16s or 17s. i think 16s will look and be better because of less work but the thing is because i work at halfords i can get any 17s for the price of the 16s

for instance i can get the super leggeras for ?600 with tyres. instead of ?1000.

Its a bloody hard desicion to make as im gettin so tempted into getting 17s because of the saving i will make, although i feel im probably better off with 16s

what do you guys think? i wanna know whats gunna look best and if i need to do work with 17s what it will involve.

cheers for ya help guys

I had a set of 17's on my mk2. My advice to you is dont do it!
I had no end of problems. You will need some arch work if you plan to lower the car. Also, in my opinion, 17's don't look that good on the mk2, they look too big. don't get me wrong, i have seen the odd mk2 which does look good on 17's. It also threw the gearing of my car out as well.
If it was me i would fit a nice set of 16's and slam the car....sorted!

I have 17" Khans on my 16v with 205/40's.  I have G60 arches, and they have been rolled a little.  My car is also lowered on Koni adjustables, but then I raised it a bit because I want to be able to fit 5 people plus drive over those f***ing London speed bumps, without rear arch scraping.

It all works, the ride height is very cumfy (still handles much better than standard), and there is no doubt that the wheels are simply the dog's sacks!  I couldn't imagine my car with 16's, if u ask me, the difference is huge, and with a discount like that, u have to get 17"s on there.  I'm still waiting to get a digi photo of it so u can see what I mean.  ;D

DONT JUST SLAM IT!  My advice is to get adjustables, but u better speak to someone like premier power or elite motorsport who will tell u the possibilities.  Oh yeah, on the downside= i have lost some full lock, and the power steering system seems to struggle to turn the wheels at slow speeds.

Oh yeah, my alloys can support tyre width of upto 215's, but I dont think it will be worth it coz I might reduce full lock even more.  I think I've got the ideal set-up and i would like to hear about others.

I've got 17's on mine as you can see in the picture below..

I'm getting it lowered 30mm soon not to much and i don't have to roll the arches either, probably will when i have more cash.

Its upto you really if you want 16s or 17s but the biger wheel looks better in my books.

Its not just a case of rolling the arches though when you lower a car. You also have to make sure you have enough clearance in the inner arch and the strut itself. I found that my tyres on my 17's were catching the inner arches and rubbing the springs if i had people in the back, or went over bumps.
Those wheels look sweet Gaz!
