car stalling HELP!!!

GTI MK2 8V
The car keeps stalling, either straight after starting up the engine, or when the revs go down (approching taffic lights, stopping the car etc)
I've also noticed the exhaust sounds noisier and if I rev the car up there is a cranking noise coming from it.
Are the 2 connected?
Any ideas please? ?

Wouldn't have thought the two were related but then if both problems started at the same time then maybe :-/ :-/ :-/
I would go for trying to identify the exhaust noise first, just in case they are related, should be easier to find whats causing that and what do you mean by a 'cranking' noise coming from it?

For the stalling I would look for a vacuum leak somewhere around the inlet manifold. If its not that it could be a faulty ISV, if you have one fitted (Difigant system). If you have the difigant system these links may help you. Pay particular attention to items 3a and 3e in the table in the first link, they are what I have mentioned above:-
