What Engine Can I Fit
« on: 08 May 2012, 15:17 »
I have a MK4 1.4 16V with the bottom end blown and obviously want to replace the engine, could someone please let me know what engines I can fit without have to make any big modifications, I not looking to fit a t18 engine just a basic exchange to get the car back on the road.

Researching the net it appears the 1.4 16v engines suffered with a lot of bottom end failures and the engines seem pricey and sought after, so a couple of options,

could I fit a 1.4 8v bottom end and use my 16V head?

Could I fit a 1.6 / 1.8 engine

As I stated Im not looking for ginormous power gains or a turbo conversion, just want to get the car back in use  :undecided:

You can fit whatever you want from the golf range But unless you can fit it yourself and get a cheap engine You would probably be cheaper Buying another 1... Obviously if you know how to do it and can get hold of a cheap engine etc then go for it plenty of build threads and info on here...

8v bottom end will be different, 1.6 or 1.8 will be a lot of work to get in and working so your stuck with like for like tbh.

I will be fitting it myself as i have the tools & knowledge to change the engine, looks like it will have to be a straight swap then, shame as Ive seen plently of 1.6 & 1.8 engines for sale but not one reasonably priced 1.4 16v

Even if you find a 1.6 or 1.8 cheap, just the engine is no good, you will need everything else including loom and ecu.
