budget coilovers?
« on: 07 May 2012, 17:31 »
I need coilovers for my golf, lookin on ebay you have lots of budget brands but are they worth gettin
Fk streer pros for 200
Some 3000 for 180
And others unnamed for even less. I won some second hand spax rsx on ebay but the seller was useless and didn't get back to me about anything. So just wondering what are the ”best” budget ones out there?

Does it have to be coilovers? I've read by most, if not all people, that at the lower end of the price scale, you'll get a better/comfier ride from a shock and spring setup for the same price. Have yet to experience it myself but tbh if I ever bought coilys, they'd be top end stuff.

At £200 your likely to get crap regardless of it being coilovers or a kit . Saying that, a friend has £200 FK AK's on his B5 passat and they are ok for the money (though no better than ok!).

A mate of mine has £200 fk's on his audi a4 and slammed it to the floor on rs4 rims, and it feels no firmer than standard suspension!! Excellent ride! For some reason though, a mates mk2 feels awful on them, as bad as my hottunings!! From my experience £200 apex -60mm shocks + springs were a noticeably nicer + safer ride than the ht's, but even with lowered top mounts etc it still wasn't low enough, so when they started leaking put coilies on.. As I'm 20v'ing mine I've got to put decent susp on as well, so will be going for spax rsx.. That'll be £1000 nearly on 3 different sets over the years, the wrong way to do it,so my advice is to try + buy once. If ride is more important than looks and you're on a budget go shock+ spring, if needing to drop the car for looks and don't drive too quick get cheapo coilies, if you want an all round package and your keeping hold of the car for years with plans on ever improving it, save more and buy a real nice setup

I've got JOM coilovers on mine and they're great!
They're not too expensive either.

On the other hand, I've got my old lowering springs and dampers for sale soon. Springs are good, dampers are alright.
