Brake pad retainers?

Do the 256mm brakes have retainers on the pads (you know the slither of metal that hooks between the two pads and a bit comes off them on the disc)? as the pads i took out did not have them and VW spares said they don't come on the 256mm disc's but the book of lies 9Haynes) say i do? just want to make sure!

I don't think they do on mk2 16v and passat with 256mm brakes.
The pads should have a spring clip built into the backing plate.

Yes they do, the pads have a spring in them.
