my mk4 golf gti turbo

 :smiley: hey all just bought a golf gti 1.8 turbo on a 1999 plate there are a few issues i have with the car, I am hopeing some gurru on here may be able to help number 1 when i start the car the idle moves between 1000rpm and 1200rpm number 2 when driving and i hit bumpbs in the road it sound heavy like knocking number 3 when i turn wheel to the left it makes a slight bump also i want to give the car a service my self what oil is best and what brand of oil filter, fuel filter, and spark plugs work best in a golf my previous car was a honda civic type r ep3 in info would be great and what are small faults i should look out for i have only had the car for a week cheers

Mine does the idle thing for few minutes to. Could be exhaust or something knocking when going over a bump. I'm no guru but no one has replied so thought i'd try and assist.  :laugh:

My golf also does this on startup and if i remember rightly its actually trying to warm the engine slightly before use, if you let it idle for a while after a minute or so the revs will drop down to 800-1000. Im sure i was  told not all golf do this though.

As for 2 and 3 you could have a bush that needs replacing or something but hard to say with such little information, need to get under the front end and have a look. Check your cv boots as they may have split and lost all the grease.

I had a knock coming from the front left turned out to be a worn bush i thought the shock was broke.
Think a new wish bone is easier there about £30 new! :smiley:
