Heavy/Sticking PAS
« on: 20 February 2012, 19:11 »
Only had my car a week and it's riddled with problems.

Anyway. When coming off a roundabout or a steady left hander my steering goes heavy and sticks. If you turn further left it clicks and then goes back to normal.

It's pretty dangerous to be honest cause you can never tell when it's going to go heavy and stick. Then it clicks to go back to normal.

PAS rack was changed 18 months ago.

NO whine or noise from PAS pump either.

Anyone had this ?

I've done a search and can only find noise, not sticking steering.

Belt slipping or faulty rack

I'd say rack is at fault too, especially with a new one being fitted not long ago

I can't imagine it's belt slipping. 60 mile journey today and it happened 4 times.

It was steering rack back rod ends. Not steering rack.

Would this really be causing it ? It's only when turning left. Only on certain corners. It feels as if a pipe is being put under pressure and then let off.

There's resistance in the steering followed by a strange twanging noise, especially when making slow, full lock maneuvers.
Strut top bearings possibly seized.

Found this, pretty much my symptoms except it happens when making fast (20-40mph) but progressive left handers.

Anyone know this ?

the bearings can seize which stops them turning increasing the resistance

Worth replacing the top mounts if you're doing the bearings, they usually come as a kit anyway

Pretty sure it is that.

Yeah strut top rubber comes with bearing.

Hopefully this and the temp sender will finish my spending on the ol' Golf.

Just for reference, changed the strut top bearings and rubbers yesterday and has eradicated the problem !

Saying that, the old bearings all greased up seem ok by hand, no resistance. I've only had a quick fiddle though, probably under pressure and occasionally they were sticking.
