Lights
« on: 14 March 2012, 01:32 »
Right here is the problem, the lights above the speedo and rev counter come on and off, sometimes if I give the top of the dash a nudge the come on or one comes on but the go off shortly after. Also the left bulb is a lot brighter.

Now I know that this is obviously some kind of loose connection. But how do I go about sorting it out? I've never had to get at any lights in a dash before?

For info all the other lights work ok in the dash.

Thanks

You need to remove the clocks to change the required bulbs. I got replacements on ebay once, GSF may do them too.

Remove all the light switches from the dash, heated screen switch, and the blanks too- there are screws for removing that dash panel in behind them. look up for the screws to the underside of the clocks. work away till you can remove the clock unit. Getting the wiring connectors and speedo cable off is a fiddle, but easy enough. Dont force things too much as its all delicate.

The black bulb holders are a twist fit to the back of the clocks. If they are just intermitantly on/off it'll be the contacts that need improving/cleaning, but you may want to replace the bulbs anyway, as your in there.

was just thinking, do you have to remove the dash to get at the bulbs or is a case of taking the screws out behind then being able to remove the clocks unit?

Is this quite a big job?

Thanks

No, you dont need to remove the whole dash. Just the panel around the clocks that the switches mount to, so you can get at the fixings for the clocks.

As I said, pry off the various switches (lights, heated window, and the blanks) on the face of the dash. I think you pull out the lower edge of the switch first iirc, then it pop's out easily.  Pull off the heater slider arms and fan knob, pry off the heater control. As you remove this stuff you reveal the screw fixings behind that are holding the clock surround/dash panel in place. Remove the various screws, taking care not to drop them into the lower dash various, then remove the panel. Take the steering wheel off too to make this possible (so make sure the wheels are straight so it goes back on straight). You can then get at the screws and plugs on the clocks to wriggle them out.

Its not as bas as it sounds, It can only take 10mins to get the clocks out if youve done it before. Just dont loose any screws. Its all fairly solid stuff, but do take care not to break any clips/mounts while your at it.

Does that make sense?

there are links to service manuals (haynes and bentley) in the maintinance section, they may have a fuller description with pictures for a better understanding.

The flicker or on off issues is probably just the dimmer wheel above the headlight switch. They have this problem when the get old and worn...

As said to change the bulbs in the clock's is a matter of taking out the dash surround...

Watch for the hidden screws so you dont bust the panel....

Two above the clocks, One above the stereo, one behind a switch blank (Bottom Right) and one behind the headlight switch...

i think it is just a loose connection and not anything too serious as when i tap the top of the dash they come back on (most of the time). It just seems like something is loose or the bulbs are loose in the holders?
